The Nine Square layout in playing card divination can give a vast amount of information concerning the present and the future.

For those who enjoy divination with regular playing cards, the Nine Square Layout gives a vast amount of information concerning the present and the future. It is more challenging than reading three singular cards, but is done in much the same way using eight sets of three cards.

Divination with Playing Cards

The Nine Square Layout is for practiced readers. If you are interested in learning to read playing cards, it might be best to start with the basics of divination with playing cards. These basics give you the opportunity to understand the colors of the cards, the meanings of the suits and numbers, and then teaches you how to combine it all for interpretation.

The Nine Square Layout

For this layout, you will choose nine cards and lay them out in sets of three from left to right. Set one, for the sake of instruction, will be considered cards 1, 2, and 3. Set two will be placed underneath of set one and will be cards 4, 5 and 6. The last set goes underneath set two, depicting cards 7, 8, and 9. This will allow you to read eight separate trios of cards.

You will begin by reading the horizontal trios of 123, 456, and 789. After that, you will read the vertical trios of 147, 258, and 369. The last trios are diagonal with cards 159 and 357.

Nine Square Example

From your deck of playing cards, pull out the 10 of diamonds, the 9 of hearts and the King of hearts. Place these in the 1, 2, and 3 card positions. Next, pull out the Queen of spades, the 9 of diamonds, and the three of diamonds, laying them in the card positions of 4, 5, and 6. Last, pull the 5 of spades, the Jack of hearts and the 10 of clubs, placing them in the 7, 8, 9 positions. This is your Nine Square Layout.

Glance through the layout and see how many black cards there are and how many red cards there are. In this case, there are six red cards and three black ones. This tells you that the reading will be quite favorable. Also, see if there is a suit that seems to show up more than the others. Here we see three hearts, which indicates family and home. Now, let's pretend that the mother of the family is the one asking for this reading.

Begin with cards 1, 2, and 3. The 10 of diamonds depicts goals and money, the 9 of hearts shows a wish fulfilled, and the King of hearts appears to be the man of the family. Looking first at the card colors, you see three red cards indicating everything is fantastic. The man of the family will reach a financial goal (shown by the 10 and the diamond), in the Spring (shown by the diamond), which fulfills his wishes (9 of hearts). It will come easily to him (heart as the last card). Cards 3, 6, and 9 will tell you more about him.

Cards 4, 5, and 6 are next. The Queen of spades would normally depict a divorced woman, but you know this woman is married. Instead, this card shows the woman is having troubles (the spade), but because the card colors are black, red, and red, you know things will get better. The 9 shows changes in finances (the diamond), and the 3 shows growth in finances (the diamond). In essence, the woman is, perhaps, lonely, but the changes and growth in their financial status will make things better. Cards 1, 4, and 7 will tell you more.

Cards 7, 8, and 9 are last in the horizontal readings. The 5 of spades indicates trouble with the body, the Jack of hearts indicates a boy who looks like his father (the King and Jack of hearts), the 10 of clubs shows a goal being reached through work. The interpretation shows the boy having a short lived (heart follows a spade) physical issue. There is a lot of work coming up for him (10 of clubs) and he seems to be putting it off (the Jack faces away from the club). Things will get better (black, red, red).

Finish the Nine Square Reading

Continue with the remaining trios, breaking each down until you have an interpretation. As you can see, a story unfolds through the playing cards, oftentimes with the details being filled in by the person you are reading for. Each person, depending on their reading style, will interpret the cards differently, but a similar story will still unfold. Use your intuition if you are having any difficulties in divining the playing cards. Practice is important too. Using this Nine Square Layout for divination with playing cards will get easier with practice.
