The purpose of a seance is to communicate with deceased loved ones (Cowan, 1994). This can be done with the help of your spirit guides by creating a safe environment, choosing the right people, and preparing carefully. Conducting a seance is not a game and, if done properly, it can be very rewarding.
Learning to Contact Your Spirit Guides
Simply put, your spirit guides are your personal helpers from the spirit realm (Eynden, 2008). Working through your spirit guides is an integral part of the seance procedure as they will be your contact between your seance group and the deceased loved one you are trying to reach. It is easiest if you know your guides by name, so before you attempt to set up a seance, you will want to get to know your guides through pendulum dowsing, then you can call them by name and speak to them any time you wish.
Choosing the Participants
A seance can be done with as few as three people or as many as six people. You should be discerning in those whom you choose to participate. You do not want someone who will not take the seance seriously or a person who screams at the slightest unusual happening.
Each person in the group should have a positive attitude, be willing to watch one another's back, and be supportive to all of the members of the group without judgment. The rapport between members should be cordial and pleasant as negativity or bad feelings can create problems with the seance.
The reason for contacting a specific deceased loved one should be discussed by the group before conducting the seance. You can attempt to contact more than one deceased loved one if there are several members with specific issues they would like to address.
Setting Up for the Seance
Before beginning set up, I use a sage stick and sage the room, the table, and any items I plan to use for the seance. This includes a tape recorder and a video camera as I always record the seance as, oftentimes, spirits will speak on a tape recorder and paranormal anomalies can be picked up on the video camera.
After this cleansing, I gather four quartz crystal clusters and a quartz pendulum, placing the intention of protection upon them. I do this by speaking directly to the crystals and requesting they be a part of the crystal pyramid to protect everyone in attendance from any low level spirits who might attempt to disrupt the gathering. The quartz crystals are then placed on the floor at the four corners of the table so each can see the others, and a little way out so they are not tripped over. The pendulum is hung over the center of the table, creating the pyramid of protection.
I, then, place four candles on the table in north, south, east, and west positions to cover the four elements of earth, fire, air, and water.
The Seance Procedure
Everyone should be seated, the candles lit, and the lights turned out. If you are recording, the tape recorder and video camera should be turned on at this time.
Each member should hold hands with the person next to them to create a complete circle. This circle should remain throughout the entire seance.
If you are hosting the seance, you should speak at this time, requesting that your spirit guides put the white light of protection around your seance group and not to allow any low level spirits into the room. After this, you will state your business - who you wish to contact and why and request that your spirit guide bring them forth if they are available. Always be respectful.
It does not have to be completely silent. Each group member should feel free to speak, sharing any feelings, images, or sounds they may be experiencing.
What to Expect
Nothing may happen the first time a seance is tried, however, do not get discouraged. If this happens, try again another time.
Take notice of such things as a wildly fluttering candle, strange noises, specific smells such as cigar smoke or perfume, imagery in the mind's eye, colors appearing around a member of the group, unusual shadows on the walls close to you, or someone in the group speaking differently. These are all signs that a deceased loved one has come forward (Sheppard, 2002).
A member of your group may be quite sensitive and fall into trance enabling the deceased loved one to speak through them.
Be prepared and do not allow yourself, or the group, to be surprised by anything that happens. Be calm and go with the flow and you may be amazed with what takes place while conducting your seance.
